When and who created Figma?

5 min read

First, what is Figma?

In short, Figma is a tool for designing websites and applications (similar to Adobe XD or Sketch). It also enables collaboration on projects, communication with colleagues about the project, and facilitates project coordination.

Who created it?

Dylan Field is the person behind the creation of Figma. He began working on Figma when he was just 20 years old, and when the program was launched, Field was only 24 years old. Before venturing into programming, Field pursued acting, then majored in political science at university, and eventually found himself working as an engineer and developer at LinkedIn and Flipboard. But how did it all begin?

While studying at Brown University in the USA, Field met a programmer named Evan Welles, and together they decided to start a startup with a $100,000 fund. Their initial goal was to design budget drones, but safety concerns led them to change their plans. Instead of drones, they shifted their focus to creating a digital design tool, inspired by Dylan’s passion for design and Evan’s expertise in computer graphics at Pixar.

What was the main concern?

The first issue they noticed was the complexity of Adobe’s interface and the lack of collaborative features for working on the same file. They saw the success of Google’s collaborative work platforms (Docs, Sheets, etc.) and realized the potential for designers to work together seamlessly. This lack of collaborative tools in the design field motivated Dylan and Evan to create a collaborative editing tool for designers. They received financial support for the project in 2012
